Dr. Kareem Moncree-Moffett: Runs for CPS School Board

Dr. Kareem Moncree-Moffett

Class 1, Run

What was your Vision for Impact Statement and how does it connect with your school board campaign?

I desire to be a community conduit for awareness, engagement, and empowerment. I will work unwaveringly towards increasing inclusion, reducing disparities with intentionality, educating on social injustices, increasing inequity awareness, and promoting global affinity.

What made you decide to run for school board? Why now?

I viewed the current pool of candidates, and wanted to ensure that there was a school board member that would be dedicated to community engagement and district connectivity. I didn’t see enough of the qualities that I believe are needed, so I decided to become a candidate.

I believe that I am uniquely qualified to help the board and district hear the voices of our marginalized families and students.

What aspects from your School Board School training are you bringing to this role?

School Board School gave me the opportunity to meet school board members and school district personnel, and understand roles and responsibilities. I will use the resources to build bridges. I’ve also been able to meet School Board School members from other classes and community partners that I know will prove to be beneficial as a board member. I understand the various board committees, and understand where my talents can be most beneficial.

What will be your main priorities as a school board member?

I want to ensure that the board understands the definition of equity, and employs the definition now that schools are open. I want to help the district/ board increase community engagement and include student perspectives. I’ve been able to do this while LSDMC* Chair at Withrow, and I can help to be a bridge.

(*Note: LSDMC stands for Local School Decision-Making Committee, the governing body at each CPS school.)

While School Board School cannot endorse candidates, our members are often eager to get involved in campaigns. If they learn more about you and decide they are interested in helping your campaign, what are the kinds of things you need?

I can always use volunteers, no matter how old the volunteer (Hint: we can use student volunteers). I am in need of volunteers to help get my message out and collect the voices within the community to keep me informed. Of course, I have an immediate need for donations to kick-off and run a successful campaign. School Board School members can share social media posts, host a virtual or in-person event, make phone calls, and pass out literature. Sharing my name with a friend or co-worker is also a quick way to support me. I can use all the positive energy that can be spared! What else should we know about you and your campaign?

Recently, someone was asked to describe me and my personality for my campaign. Amazingly, they described me as a “fearless advocate for students.” Another person described me as a “dedicated and tireless bridge-builder.” I am genuinely humbled by those descriptions because I’m not doing those things to become a candidate. These are things that I simply do because they need to get done.

No matter the seat, I will always advocate for students, families, and teachers!

I hope and pray that my work is contagious and successful.
